A visit to this colourful temple in Kowloon is an unparalleled opportunity to experience an active Taoist temple, where hundreds of Hong Kong’s citizens come daily to pray and have their fortunes told. For the latter, devotees light incense and kneel before the main altar before shaking a bamboo cup containing “fortune sticks” until one falls to the floor. The fortune stick is exchanged for a piece of paper corresponding the number engraved on it, which is then interpreted by a soothsayer. Set amidst towering apartment blocks and malls of urban Wong Tai Sin district, the temple’s distinct Chinese architecture, pitched roof, engravings and ornamentation combine with the mass of flowers and cultural spectacle of teeming worshippers wafting incense beneath red and yellow lanterns to make an unforgettable sight.
