This 34m-high bronze statue of the Buddha has become a symbol of Hong Kong, sitting majestically on a hilltop surrounded by the lush woodlands of Lantau Island. 240 steps lead up to its platform, from which it is possible to admire the Buddha and the statues of six Buddhist deities or “devas” surrounding it, presenting their offerings. If you buy a ticket you can enjoy a vegetarian meal in a canteen built into the pedestal on which the Buddha sits, prepared by monks from the neighbouring Po Lin Monastery #316. The “Big Buddha” is a very popular day out, combined with the cable car #315, a look at the monastery, and the touristy Ngong Ping Village.
