Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery contains some of Britain's finest funerary architecture and many prominent figures are buried here. The most famous is perhaps Karl Marx, whose tomb is Grade I listed. Famous sections of the cemetery include the Circle of Lebanon, an impressive row of vaults topped by a Lebanese cedar tree; and Egyptian Avenue. The cemetery is split between east and west. The east side contains Marx's tomb and is open to the public. Admission is £4 for adults. Visitors must pay to join a tour in order to see the most interesting parts of the cemetery in the west side, and tours run daily.
