068: Hudec Memorial Hall

This is the former residence of Laszlo Hudec, probably old Shanghai's most famous architect, located in the Columbia Circle area #007. Hudec operated during Shanghai's boom times in the 1920s and 30s, and was responsible for the Park Hotel #266, Mu’en Church (formerly Moore Memorial Church) #268, China Baptist Publication Society and Christian Literature Society Building (see Yuan Ming Yuan Road #308) and Shanghai Grand Cinema #164, amongst many more. Disappointingly, this incredible, renovated old Tudor-style mansion is only open to the public on Tuesday afternoons and Sundays, and only one ground-floor room is opened. Hopefully additional floors and rooms will be opened to the public in the future. Whilst in the area, visit the Spanish villa across the street and the former house of J. G. Ballard. See Columbia Circle #070 for more details.
