151: Russian Orthodox Mission Cathedral

Built in 1937, this cathedral, topped with a blue dome, served the large Russian community in pre-Communist Shanghai. Abandoned for decades, the cathedral was fully renovated in 1988 and is now an art gallery and museum space. The first Orthodox service since 1962 was conducted here in 2013. Future plans for the space are unknown, however the building’s façade is stunning in itself, as is the contrast with the other buildings around it. The Mansion House Hotel opposite contains lots of 1920s Shanghai memorabilia.
