309: Former British Consulate

Built in 1871, this impressive building served as the British consulate until 1949, apart from a brief wartime interlude. Having fallen into disrepair for many years, the consulate building and the adjacent Consul General's residence were finally renovated as part of the preparations for the 2010 Shanghai Expo #356. The consulate building was used for Chinese government officials during the Expo and is now part of the Peninsula hotel #305 next door, used for private functions. The former residence is now accessible, being the new Shanghai Patek Phillipe flagship store. Take a wander in and be sure to have a look at the grand staircase and verandas on the first floor.
