Completed in 1907, Waibaidu Bridge, also known as the Garden Bridge, spans Suzhou Creek #312 at the north end of the Bund #295. Made from steel imported from England, it replaced an earlier bridge made entirely from wood, and the new structure facilitated a rapid expansion in international trade in Shanghai in the 19th century. In order to complete a recent renovation project, the Shanghai government asked the British government for the original designs, which were subsequently tracked down in a London archive and handed over.
