The Shanghai Stock Exchange is mainly of interest from an architectural point of view. The square building is hollow in the middle and evokes the old Chinese coins or tongbi, which also had a square hole in the centre. Situated off the main avenue in Lujiazui financial district, the stock exchange is China’s largest, listing companies with a combined market capitalization of over US$2.5 trillion.
