Moganshan, or Mogan Mountain, is around 200km from Shanghai. The mountain and its leafy foothills are a favourite summer retreat from the city’s oppressive heat and were popular with wealthy Europeans in the first half of the 20th century, who built summer villas here. Many of the original buildings remain on the mountaintop, in various states of disrepair. The area has seen a resurgence in parallel with Shanghai’s rising wealth, and the provision of high-quality accommodation has increased markedly. Le Passage and Naked Stables Private Reserve are the go-to resorts. Moganshan is excellent for hiking and cycling, and its hidden reservoirs offer a fantastic opportunity for a bracing outdoor swim.
